Primarily self-taught, I have studied with and participated in workshops by various nationally known artists and authors including Barbara Nechis, (Napa Valley, California), Margaret Martin (Buffalo NY), Jan Hart (Espanola, New Mexico), Jeanne Carbonetti (Burlington, Vermont), Robert Burridge, (California), Jean Grastorf, (St. Petersburg, FL) as well as with local artists from the Niagara Region. My passion for creating art has led me to destinations such as Westport, County Mayo, Ireland; Santa Fe, New Mexico; Rockland, Maine; New England areas; North Carolina, the highlands of Guatemala and Oaxaca, Mexico.
The art I create is a soulful expression and interactive expression of life around me. Whether it be the spontaneity of watercolours, the vibrant energy of acrylics or the luscious texture of oils, it is these mediums that all lend themselves to reflecting the subjects and feelings of the moment.
Creativity is taking feelings, intentions and energy and turning them into an image. As an artist, I try to say something to the viewer via the piece; portraying my intention whether the picture represents a statement or something as simple as a feeling. Taking an idea and processing it through my imagination to the final piece is the essence of creating for me.
As an artist I feel most successful when I feel I’ve pushed the limits and have expanded my boundaries, whether it be with colour, texture, a subject, whatever. It’s created yet another personal and original message of my own. In turn, it becomes the message and energy which the viewer will interpret and thereby, form their own relationship with the piece.
I can present the painting “from soul to hand” but really it is up to the viewer to cast the final acceptance of the piece – that is the most exciting thing of all – when the viewer loves what they’re looking at and have interpreted it for themselves. I believe a piece of art is successful when it evokes an emotional feeling for the viewer.
Finally, when a piece is finished, I thoroughly enjoy a feeling of optimism – in preparation for my next creations.
