Born in St. Catharine’s, Ontario, Mary Prittie resided in Port Colborne from 1939 until she died in 1999. She was a founding member of the Port Colborne Art Club in 1964 and subsequently became a Life Member. Mary studied under many renowned artists including Tony Urquhart, Gary Kennedy and Gordon Perrier. A member of many local art associations, in 1986 she became a member of the Ontario Society of Artists (OSA). In 1988 Mary was chosen to become a member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour (CSPWC) and has received formal recognition from Ottawa as an important Canadian artist.
Mary Prittie has received awards for work in many different media, including oils, watercolours, batik, woodcut printing, , mixed media and ink, as well as various other types of drawing. Her work includes a broad range of subject matters – local landscapes, life drawing, animals, ships, bridges, orchards, and florals.
The artist’s work has been on exhibit at numerous galleries throughout Canada including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Art Gallery of Hamilton, the Beaverbrook Gallery, Rodman Hall Arts Center, and the Grimsby Public Art Gallery to name just a few.
Mary has work in the permanent collections of the Robert McLaughlin Gallery, the Niagara Regional Government Buildings, and the Rodman Hall Arts Center as part of the Diploma Collection of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolours. The Grimsby Public Art Gallery purchased six of her works in 1985.
In 1979, Governor General Edward Schreyer was presented with a painting by Mary Prittie. The painting now hangs in Rideau Hall, Ottawa. Premier David Peterson was presented with work by the artist in 1977.
CHCH Channel 11 television featured Mary Prittie’s work in 1986 in the programme “Sketches of Our Town”.
